Why Wear Braces?
There are several good reasons for wearing braces. They promote good health for your teeth and gums and also provide a pleasing appearance. Straight teeth are easier to brush and floss than crooked teeth. Failure to clean your teeth properly can lead to bad breath, tooth decay, gum disease and heart disease. Crooked teeth can create problems in chewing, resulting in damage to teeth. Bad habits, such as the ones listed below, can result in the need for orthodontic treatment:
The overcrowding of teeth should be corrected with braces. If your mouth or jaw is too small to allow enough room for permanent teeth, these teeth will overlap. This is unattractive and makes teeth difficult to brush and floss.
Braces will increase your self-esteem. Straight healthy teeth help you feel better about yourself. Studies prove that self-confident people tend to be more successful people.
Malocclusion is a word very few know about, but many children experience. Malocclusion ('mal' meaning bad and 'occlusion' meaning how the teeth come together) can be caused by thumb sucking and lip biting, but is mainly hereditary in most cases. Malocclusion can take many forms (i.e. overbite, underbite, overcrowding, etc.) that only orthodontic measures can correct. One of the problems with orthodontic treatment for children is time. With school and school activities taking up much of the child's time, we have structured our office hours to offer the convenience needed for proper treatment.
Braces are not just for kids! More and more adults are opting for orthodontic treatment. Presently, adults make up 30%-40% of our patients and this percentage is increasing. Important benefits for adults seeking orthodontic treatment are an improved appearance, increased self-esteem and a much healthier smile.
Common Questions About Orthodontics
Q Who should wear braces?
A Braces are worn by both children and adults, not only to improve the attractiveness of your smile but also because braces correct improper alignment of teeth that can lead to gum disease and early loss of teeth.
Q When should I visit the Orthodontist?
A Some orthodontic corrections need to be made early. Ordinarily, children should be checked by our orthodontist at the time permanent teeth begin to erupt to detect any deficiencies in the child's teeth formation. This is usually at 6 years of age. Adults should visit the orthodontist to improve the appearance of their smile, as well as overall dental health. It is never too late to have a beautiful healthy smile.
Q How long will my orthodontic treatment last?
A We expect your treatment time to last from 12 to 30 months depending on your individual case. Your cooperation in keeping appointments, proper hygiene and care of braces may allow us to finish your orthodontic treatment early.
Q What can I expect on my first visit?
A Your initial visit will give you an opportunity to meet the doctor and our knowledgeable staff who will answer any questions you may have regarding orthodontic care. If braces are needed, a convenient appointment will be made for you to begin treatment.
Q What kind of braces are available?
A In addition to the popular metal braces with which most people are familiar, we also offer clear (ceramic) braces on the top teeth for those who want their braces less visible.
